The area of the castle on the hill in front of the port, continuously inhabited from prehistoric times until today. Perhaps is the most important Venetian monument of the island, being the only district of Naxos, where even today prevails Roman Catholic element. The Middle Ages was known as Inside Castle Naxia but as Lower Castle. Now looks like as it was during the Turkish occupation, when most of its walls collapsed. They say it was built by Marco Sanudo in the 13th century using the ruins of the ancient city to dwell he and his followers and there made the capital of the duchy, but it is not known in what form it was in before.
